Sustainable fish purchase guide

Introduction

There are many guides and ideas about buying sustainable fish, but it is not rocket science and requires only a committment to change the way you approach buying fish. If you want to make a diffference to the environment and support a sustainable local industry, then read on because you can do it!

The Goodfish Guide to Sussex sustainable fish - You can make a difference

1st Choice

In summary you should be seeking fish that tick the following boxes;

It is caught locally (not just sourced locally)

The boats that caught it were under 10 metres long and set out and returned on the same day

It was caught outside of the fishes main breeding season

It was not caught with a beam or pair trawl

Remember it may be sold locally (often called sourced locally), but not caught locally and this is important to check

Coast Friendly is a scheme that seeks to help identify fish that are caught according to the above suggestions. It will be trialled in Sussex soon, but find out more by clicking on the following logo link - If you are a fishmonger or restaurant, you may wish to join!

2nd Choice

If you need, or want to buy other fish not currently available from local seas, then use most of the same criteria shown above, but also seek out;

Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) labelled fish

Line caught fish

Frozen fish (from local sources)

Organic Farmed fish

Sustainable tinned fish

Month by month guide

A monthly guide is being considered and if confirmed will sit on the home page of this web site next to news and useful links. It is planned that people will simply click onto the home page when planning to buy fish to see what is available and out of its breeding season.

It is also hoped that Sussex Fishmongers will support and help develop this basic guide.

Where to buy local and sustainable fish

A Sussex Fish Finder data base has been established to start to list out where in Sussex people might be able to buy local and sustainable fish. You can visit this by clicking on the find your fish link to the right.

A list of Coast Friendly fishmongers will be developed here.

Further information

This information can seem like a minefield and often confuses people further. Goodfish suggests that if you stick to the following basic strategy then you will do the right thing. You can then use this further information below to make even more specific and locally appropriate sustainable fish purchases.

1st choice = Buy locally caught (not just sourced) fish from small inshore boats that do not beam or pair trawl. Some maybe available frozen outside of the normal seasons.

2nd Choice = Buy Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) labelled fish, or buy organic farmed fish
